A 16 Year Old's Future in Utter Ruin Due to School's Zero Tolerance Policy

Seriously, schools have gone insane.  Down in Florida, an apparently excellent student who has had stellar conduct was just arrested and expelled for mixing toilet cleaner and tin foil in an 8 ounce water bottle outside, causing a little explosion and some smoke.  She says she was just doing a chemistry experiment and didn't mean to hurt anyone and it appears that most people believe her, but here is the statement from the school:

"Anytime a student makes a bad choice it is disappointing to us. Unfortunately, the incident that occurred at Bartow High School yesterday was a serious breach of conduct. In order to maintain a safe and orderly learning environment, we simply must uphold our code of conduct rules. We urge our parents to join us in conveying the message that there are consequences to actions. We will not compromise the safety and security of our students and staff."

Was anyone actually in danger?  No.  Yet the school is expelling this model student and had the police arrest her.  She is also being charged with felonies.  Due to an innocent mistake, her future is completely ruined.  What college is going to touch her now?  What chance does she have?  The school is being completely unreasonable, knowing they face no negative consequences from acting so.
