Between 1948 and 1967, when Israel re-took Jerusalem, Jews were barred from our holiest of shrines, the Western Wall. After Israel took over, instead of barring muslims from their 3rd holiest shrine, the al-aqsa mosque, Israel not only allowed them full freedom to pray within it but even allowed the Islamic Waqf Trust, a body independent of the Israeli government, to manage it. So right now, there is full freedom of religion within Jerusalem with Jews, Christians and Muslims allowed to pray at their respective holy sites. Now what do you expect to happen if East Jerusalem, which includes the Old City, is given to the Palestinian Authority? According to a translation of a documentary on official Palestinian Authority Television, the plan is to demolish the Western Wall Plaza and instead build apartments for Palestinians. So tell me again how the status of Jerusalem can be negotiable?
